All things translation

La traduzione richiede elevata maestria, in aggiunta a spiccate capacità tecniche. Una traduzione di successo si basa sulla perfetta comprensione della lingua di partenza e della lingua d’arrivo, oltre che della cultura dei popoli che le parlano. Una traduzione di successo è coerente con il testo originale (senza modificare, aggiungere o sottrare niente al suo significato) e autentica nella lingua d’arrivo, tanto da far credere a un lettore, la cui lingua madre è proprio quella d’arrivo, che il testo sia stato originariamente scritto nella sua lingua. Le traduzioni effettuate parola per parola sono raramente buone traduzioni, non solo perché, soprattutto nel caso di traduzioni letterarie, si perderebbero le sfumature del testo (come espressioni idiomatiche e giochi di parole), ma anche perché non si terrebbe conto delle differenze culturali. Pertanto, in quanto traduttrice, mi piace paragonare una buona traduzione a un cioccolatino fatto a mano, amorevolmente confezionato da un maître chocolatier, che mette anni di esperienza e molta cura in ogni delizioso dolcetto. Pur producendo molti cioccolatini simili tra loro, ognuno di essi è unico e porta con sé la creatività del suo ideatore. Lo stesso vale per la traduzione di un testo.

Translation requires a high degree of artistry and excellent technical skills. Successful translations are based on perfect understanding of both the source language and the target language, as well as the culture of speakers of both languages. Successful translations are both true to the original text (not changing, adding or subtracting any part of the meaning) and authentic in the target language, appearing or feeling to a native speaker of the target language to have originally been written in that language. Word-for-word translations are rarely successful, not only because, especially for literary translations, the nuances of writing (such as idioms and puns) would be lost, but also because cultural differences would be ignored. Thus, as a translator, I like to compare a good translation to hand-made chocolates, lovingly crafted by a master chocolatier who pours years of experience and lots of care into each delicious confection. While the chocolatier might produce a lot of chocolates that are similar, each one is unique and bears the creativity of its maker. And so it is with translation.

CHI SONO – ABOUT ME

Mi chiamo Simona e sono una traduttrice freelance (di testi letterari e tecnici) dal 2005. Le lingue sono sempre state la mia passione, fin da quando ero bambina, e mi sono impegnata molto per riuscire a fare il lavoro dei miei sogni. Infatti, come mi racconta mia madre, già a otto anni avevo deciso che avrei fatto la traduttrice, proprio per combinare due delle mie più grandi passioni: le lingue e i libri.

My name is Simona and I’ve been working as a freelance translator (both of literary and technical texts) since 2005. Languages have been my cup of tea since I was a child and I’ve been studying and working hard for the job of my dreams. As my mother told, when I was about eight, I used to say I wanted to be a translator, in order to combine two of my biggest passions: languages and books.
